Incontinence Tips

Incontinence Tips

In this blog I will give you five incontinence tips that I feel are important for my readers to consider. There are many other incontinence tips that are available for discussion and will be discussed in future blogs, but for now we shall stick with only five.  But before I discuss the incontinence tips, I want to briefly talk about something that’s been on my mind about doctors and people with incontinence.

Most individuals who have urinary incontinence find it difficult to discuss their condition, not only with friends, but with their doctor as well. Let’s face it, you would like to talk to your friends for suggestions and help, but it’s an embarrassing subject to bring up…even to your doctor. I want to be very clear about when you should, indeed, be talking to your doctor about urinary incontinence…and that is when you have a disease or physical ailment that is the cause of your urinary incontinence. In those cases, your doctor, and only your doctor, is capable of explaining the relationship between your disease and your urinary incontinence and whether medical intervention is needed to treat your incontinence. If on the other hand, your symptoms are minor leakage problems or perhaps age related, chances are you can manage your symptoms by using absorbent or protective incontinence products.  These products are very popular and can be used for both light and heavy leakage. They are suitable for both women and men and sold under various brand names; including Tena®, Depend®, Dignity®, Salk®, Capri® and other brands.

It’s understandable that many who experience incontinence prefer to shop online because they are uncomfortable buying products in a retail store such as supermarkets and drug stores. Today, buying incontinence products online is becoming more and more popular because you can make your purchases in the privacy of your own home. In addition, the product is quickly and discreetly shipped directly to your door steps.  Another advantage of buying incontinence products online is that the selection of brands is much broader than you will find in a retail store.  Click on this link to view what’s available when you shop online versus what you will find in a retail outlet.

Careway Wellness Center carries several lines of incontinence products. You can shop online or in our retail store. I would be remiss if I did not mention that the Tena line has been Careway’s best selling line of incontinence products for the past eleven years in a row. Because of our sales record with the Tena Company, Careway is able to offer an extensive free sample program whereby customers can select free samples of any of the Tena products and try them in the privacy of their own home before deciding to make a purchase. This guarantees that one has selected the correct product for their individual condition. In addition, Careway Wellness Center has a unique program known as the Tena Club. When members of the Tena Club purchase 9 packages of the same item, they get the 10th package absolutely FREE. View the video below to see how simple it is to join the Tena Club.

About Incontinence Tips –

You can never get enough incontinence tips, from whatever sources, about managing your incontinence condition. Any bits of information about controlling urinary leakage should always be welcomed. There could just be that one tip that will work for you, so seriously consider any new tip you may stumble upon. Some of the incontinence tips found in this blog may be familiar to you, however, some may not be and should be considered.

Here are five tips to consider:

#1.  Fluid Intake –  Fluid intake is frequently discussed in relation to incontinence. You may be tempted to drink less liquids, but this can cause your urine to become concentrated or strong, which can aggravate the bladder and actually make it more active rather than less active. Drink liquids according to your natural thirst. This should be enough to keep the urine a healthy, pale straw color.  Drinking excessive amounts of liquid, on the other hand, will increase your urge to urinate.  Therefore, when it comes to drinking liquids, look to find a healthy balance that is suitable for your personal lifestyle.

#2Limit your Caffeine, Alcohol and Soda intake –  I don’t want to suggest that you should cut these things out entirely, but be aware that caffeine and alcohol are diuretics and have a tendency to be irritating to the bladder.  Carbonated sodas should also be limited because they can be bothersome for some, but not all individuals, so monitor yourself and drink them in moderation.  Remember the rule…if you are making more trips to the bathroom because of what you’re drinking, reconsider your drinking habits.

#3.  Empty Your Bladder Regularly –  If possible, time your voiding by going to the bathroom on a regular basis. Every two to three hours is a good idea for people who have urinary incontinence or overactive bladder. Most people wait until their bladder feels full, but that method doesn’t work for people with urinary incontinence. Try to remember to empty your bladder before leaving the house — or office or restaurant — even if you don’t think you need to go.

#4.  Perform Pelvic floor exercises on a regular basis   Follow this incontinence tip and you will be rewarded.  A large percentage of individuals with incontinence have found that once they practiced pelvic floor exercises or Kegels, they began to have control over their incontinence symptoms rather than their incontinence symptoms having control over them.  In some cases, Kegel exercises have even cured incontinence.  Learn how to do them correctly and exercise regularly according to a planned regime.  I have written a blog on Kegel exercises that, if you haven’t read, you should read.  It’s never too late to start Kegel exercises…even people in their 70s and 80s have improved their symptoms by doing Kegel exercises.

#5.  No Smoking –  People who have urinary incontinence should do whatever is necessary to stop smoking.  Several studies have illustrated a relationship between smoking and incontinence.  It is well known that smoking damages the small blood vessels in our body’s organs, including the bladder, which can result in tissue weakness.  Furthermore, smoking can lead to coughing, which can cause urine leakage in people who have stress incontinence. And, of course, as most of use know, smoking has been linked to bladder cancer.  Why is it we know so much about the harmful effects of smoking, but refuse to quit.  My heart goes out to those who are addicted to smoking and I urge them to seek every avenue to stop smoking…even if you failed many times in your efforts to stop…please try again!

My next blog will cover some of the horrific myths about incontinence, and believe me there are some beauties out there.
